Seriously “Green” and filled with ideas!

The time for chiding our more conservation minded friends is over…its now time for some serious “green” thinking. Attending the 7th annual “Assateague Coast Day” celebration sponsored by organizations such as The Assateague Coastal Trust and Maryland Coastal Bays at the State Park on Saturday got me to thinking. I thoroughly appreciate and applaud what these folks are working to do – helping to save our coastal environment!
Fact is, unless born here most of us relocate to this area because we enjoy the proximity to the water. Many come envisioning a more relaxed lifestyle that offers boating, fishing or other water related activities. For some, the natural scenery provided by the ocean, the area bays and rivers is the attraction. No matter what the reason, moving here requires that we purchase or build a home. These days, this too requires that we become seriously “green”…finding a place to live in which we can sustain those dreams within current economic realities.
Recently, my curiosity was piqued by a sign along Rt. 50 stating “Ask about our green home”. Currently living in Berlin MD where the electric rates have gone off the charts – and after having replaced every light bulb with a “twirley” thing, lowered or raised the thermostat accordingly and added new faucets everywhere, I was ready to learn more about this energy saving, “green” home, right away!
Contacting the builder, Resort Homes Inc., I was told that there would be an Open House presentation very soon. But being impatient, we drove over to 128 South Ocean Drive in Montego Bay off 130th Street last week for a “sneak peek”. Happily we found the cottage model open – door ajar, music playing and lights on, ready to view. Throughout the house were little, green, leaf shaped signs touting numerous “green” economies and benefits. From the smart energy conserving materials used in construction to the new tank-less hot water system to the double tap faucets – this house definitely appeared to have had much thought put into its design. Serious “green” thoughts! My companion and I, although being long time homeowners – learned much and liked it a lot! Perhaps you will too! The official Open House will begin Saturday, September 20th from 11:30 until 1 pm – although, you may phone 410-213-7721 anytime and ask for Darryl Greer.
Now, we just have to find a lot upon which to put it!
